Anglesey school set to close tomorrow due to severe weather conditions

Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi will shut for the “safety and wellbeing of pupils and staff” with heavy rainfall and very strong winds forecast for Anglesey.

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning, as Storm Éowyn risks damaging buildings and other infrastructure in the region.

The school’s closure was a “precautionary measure”, headteacher Adam Rhys Williams said in a letter to parents earlier this afternoon.

The letter read: “Due to the severe weather conditions predicted for tomorrow morning, we have decided to close Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi on Friday, 24th.

“This decision has not been made lightly, but the safety and wellbeing of our pupils and staff must remain our priority.

“The Met Office has issued weather warnings for tomorrow as Storm Éowyn is set to bring very strong winds and heavy rainfall across Anglesey.

“Winds are expected to strengthen significantly during the morning, with accompanying risks of damage to our buildings and challenging conditions due to heavy rain.

“The forecast also indicates a high likelihood of disruption to local infrastructure, including transport and the potential closure of bridges. Such closures would significantly impact staffing arrangements and the safe operation of the school.

“We understand that school closures can cause inconvenience, but this precautionary measure has been taken to prioritise everyone’s safety and has been made in collaboration with our local primary schools.

“All lessons will go online and will be available on Google Classroom. Subjects that do not have a Google Classroom set up will share their class code through Classcharts.

“We plan to reopen the school on Monday 27th, provided it is safe to do so.”
